It began with a desire to record some of my arrangements. It soon evolved into a group known as the Pacific Wind Ensemble.
From 1992 to 1994 and 2000 to 2003, this ensemble studied, rehearsed, and performed a broad spectrum of wind chamber music. This hand-picked, elite music group captivated hundreds of Bay Area concert-goers and casual listeners. The makeup comprised recent music conservatory graduates, orchestra musicians, professional freelancers, and talented amateurs.
I founded this ensemble while I was a San Francisco State University student. It was my first practical experience as a conductor, which would also require my evolving skills as a recruiter of musicians, buyer of sheet music, purveyor of venues, and printer of flyers and programs. Magically, once I had started rehearsing with the group, other conducting opportunities appeared, which I savored with the eagerness of a child tasting his first lollipop.
